I arrived in Auckland and spent the first day finding my bearings around the CBD doing important ‘city’ jobs like buying a jumper (It’s Autumn here and I am unprepared!) and a New Zealand sim card for my phone.
There are always ‘free’ things to do in cities and they usually involve simply using your feet and exploring. So that is just what I did. I picked up some local knowledge (to save my money going up the skytower for views and climb Mount Eden instead) and the panoramic views were BEAUTIFUL. There is also a gorgeous grassy crater 50 metres deep within the summit cone – a reminder of the volcanic nature of New Zealand.
On the way to Mount Eden, I met a girl called August from Shanghai! We got chatting and ended up climbing up together.
August convinced me (and then I convinced my American room mate Kelly) to come on a bar crawl that evening. $10 for 4 drinks in 4 bars and the chance to win prizes in competitions that force you to leave your dignity at the door. It’s not normally my kind of thing….but it was pretty amusing being herded from bar to bar in a crowd of over 100!
